What is Electric Tracer Heat?

Dec. 01, 2022

Electric Tracer Heat is an engineered system that maintains or protects process piping, equipment, vessels, and instruments at specified temperatures and within specified design criteria. Most commercial electric tracer systems are resistive, in the form of a cable placed on a pipe. When an electric current flows through a resistive element, the heat generated is proportional to the square of the current and the resistance of the element to the current.

Application solutions for electric heat tracing

Heat tracing solutions keep critical processes running properly, protect piping and equipment from freezing, keep transmission lines flowing, and provide safe and comfortable winter heating for buildings and homes. The following are the application options for electric heat tracing

1. Temperature maintenance

The heat tracing system for temperature maintenance has a wide range of applications. It ranges from maintaining the flow of media to supporting efficient production. Ensure a dedicated hot water supply to maintain fluids and liquids at the required temperature level and protect critical safety lines.

2. Tank insulation

Industrial tank insulation systems reduce heat loss or gain, keeping stored fluids at a constant temperature while minimizing energy consumption.

3.De-icing

Avoid the formation of ice dams and icicles in buildings or facilities with efficient, versatile, and aesthetically pleasing de-icing technology.

4. Heating

Some heating processes sometimes require particularly high performance, for example when restarting a tower or reactor. Once the target temperature is reached, power can be reduced to conventional temperature maintenance levels, improving productivity and operational performance by ensuring fluid temperature maintenance in industrial process heating equipment. This flexibility allows the tracer system to be versatile, using more energy only when necessary.

5. Pipe freeze protection

Use pipe freeze protection technology to prevent damage caused by frozen and burst pipes.

6. Offshore freeze protection

Use anti-freeze and de-icing technology to protect offshore vessels, rigs, and other equipment in harsh Arctic environments.

7. Long pipeline heating

Ensure freeze protection, viscosity control, and temperature maintenance in long-distance trace heating applications.

8. Frost protection

Ground ice beneath storage tanks, freezers, and other cold room environments is potentially dangerous and costly. If supply lines freeze, not only can production be interrupted, but considerable damage can be done to the entire piping system. A competent trace heating system will ensure safety and reliability and allow smooth operations. Tracing heat for freeze protection ensures that the minimum temperature is not exceeded at any one point in time.

Industrial applications that use electric trace heat to protect against freezing or maintain temperature can be found in oil and gas production, storage facilities, food processing, refineries, pharmaceutical production, power generation, water, and waste treatment plants, and many others.
